1. Bath maintenance
The baths produce the desired results under two conditions:
the content of their basic constituents must remain within a more or less extensive, but clearly defined, compositional range;
impurities introduced or formed in the baths must not exceed certain concentration limits.

The longer the baths last, the more scrupulously their compositional requirements are respected. Without the addition of reagents or the elimination of impurities, bath composition evolves as a result of :
