3. Conclusion
This article highlights the obvious benefits of phosphorus-containing flame retardants for the flameproofing of polymeric materials. In fact, phosphorus flame retardants are less toxic than halogenated flame retardants, and limit the negative impact of flameproofing with mineral fillers on the mechanical properties of materials. The different modes of action of phosphorus-based flame retardants, depending on the degree of oxidation of the phosphorus atoms, make them suitable for a wide variety of polymers and applications. In fact, for thermosetting polymers or those rich in hydroxy groups, a condensed-phase action is preferable. On the other hand, phosphorus flame retardants active in the gas phase are better suited to thermoplastic polymers and olefins.
