5. PolyHIPE prepared from particle-stabilized HIPE
In addition to surfactants, the internal dispersed phase of emulsions can also be stabilized by colloidal particles adsorbed at the liquid interface. These emulsions are generally known as Pickering emulsions and can be of the W/O or O/W type
. O/W Pickering emulsions are, for the time being, less common than W/O emulsions, and are mainly used in the preparation of silica and alumina ceramics. They are therefore not dealt with here. Bon et al. prepared W/O Pickering emulsions using nanoparticle latexes, generating poly(divinylbenzene) cellular monoliths
