4. Passivation of reinforcement in sound concrete
Reinforcing bars leaving the factory are coated with a layer of adherent scale. They are then stored on site prior to installation and insertion into the concrete. They then oxidize, and the porous oxidation layer (figure 11) is penetrated during casting by the cement solution towards the metal surface, where passivation or corrosion reactions take place.
