13. Corrosion and additive manufacturing

Metal additive manufacturing (MAM), a process by which complex
multifunctional metal parts are produced in a layer by layer fashion,
is considered one of the enabling technologies for Industry 4.0. This
technology has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years
and has found numerous applications in industries such as medical
implants, energy, aerospace, and automotive due to the fact that it
allows near net-shape manufacturing of geometrically complex parts
such as lattice structures and three-dimensional structures with undercuts
or cavities. Nowadays, a great number of metals and alloys can be
processed by additive manufacturing techniques, depending mainly on
the availability of the raw materials as appropriate feedstock for
the MAM processes.
