Molybdenum powder is used in the production of molybdenum (and its alloys) by vacuum electrofusion or powder metallurgy. Tungsten is often the major impurity, due to the very similar properties of the two materials. Chemical separation (in liquid phase using tributylphosphate or amyl acetate) or ion exchange chromatography in hydrochloric solution
are the most appropriate methods.
