2.1.1 Manufacturing
Rock slag is obtained by pouring liquid slag into a pit and allowing it to cool as slowly as possible. The pit may be located, as at blast furnace no. 4 in Dunkirk, near the blast furnace casting hall, and the slag is poured directly into it via a spout at the end of the slag channel. In other cases (such as at the Chiba plant in Japan), the slag is first poured into cast-steel tanks placed on rail-mounted carts. The pits are then installed at a distance from the blast...
