Germanium is rarely extracted from ores. However, there are possibilities from oxidized iron ores. In general, extraction is carried out from sulfidic or oxidic concentrates, by chlorination followed by purification. .
When the germanium contained in scraps is extracted, it is converted into GeO2 oxide, if necessary, and the same operations are carried out as those implemented from concentrates.
