The world's bismuth production comes mainly from the extraction of bismuth from non-ferrous raw metals. In the case of bullion lead, bismuth is a co-product of lead. In the case of raw copper and tin, bismuth is an impurity that should be eliminated rather than recovered, as it leads to a depreciation of the metal with which it is associated.
Lead smelting provides at least 90% of the bismuth consumed worldwide . Lead also contains silver, copper, tin, zinc, arsenic, antimony and sometimes gold.
