6. Appendix B – Measuring belt temperature by radiation

The main difficulties in achieving reliable strip temperature measurement inside the oven are :

  • protection of the sensitive element from stray radiation from the furnace walls;

  • the influence of emissivity variations on the strip surface.

6.1 Protection against stray radiation

The sensitive element is protected from radiation by a screen tube, cooled internally by circulating water or protective gas, (figure 25 ), the distance between the strip and the screen, d, must be less than D/ 3. (D screen diameter).

The pyrometer optics are focused on the strip.
