5. Alloying elements in steels
The influences of alloying elements that may be introduced into steels must be studied in relation to various parameters:
their solubility ;
their action on equilibrium structures;
their ability to form certain compounds (nitrides, oxides, sulfides and intermetallics);
their action on non-equilibrium transformations.
Without being totally decisive, the solubility of an alloying element in γ-iron provides initial information on the quantities that can be incorporated into a steel and solubilized in austenite. Of course, beyond this initial estimate, solubilities in α-iron need to be examined to predict evolutionary trends during or following allotropic transformations...
