The oxidation states of tungsten range from – 2 to + 6. The lower states – 2 to + 1 exist only in organometallic compounds, and the higher ones (+ 6 in particular) correspond to acidic properties.
At room temperature, solid tungsten is only attacked by fluorine gas and nitro-hydrofluoric acid. Regal water (HCI + HNO3) and bases (NaOH, KOH) only attack it in the presence of oxidizing agents (H2O2 or K3 [Fe(CN)6 ]). Around 250°C it rapidly dissolves in molten...
