1.1 Definition

A material is said to be electroluminescent when an electric current passes through it, emitting light in a non-thermal way.

The phenomena involved in organic electroluminescence are complex and still incompletely understood. Nevertheless, it is now accepted that the following four stages occur successively (figure 4 ):

  • injection of electrons and holes from the cathode and anode respectively;

  • charge transport in the material in the form of charged species called polarons (p + ...
