3. Molding
All the usual casting methods (see Casting - Coremaking article in this treatise, reference
[2]
) can be used with magnesium alloys, taking into account the particularities of the base metal. The metal's oxidizability, low density, high thermal conductivity and low heat capacity call for a thorough study of the casting process, in order to control solidification. Taking these particularities into account requires dialogue between the designer and the caster, in order to find the best compromise.
