3. Binders
Binders are defined as products which, when added to the base sand, give the molding material, firstly, a certain plasticity to enable it to take on the shape of the model, and, secondly, by hardening, a mechanical strength ensuring that this shape is retained until the metal is finally solidified. Depending on the process used, and whether for molds or cores, modern binders can be of mineral or organic origin.
In contrast to elasticity, plasticity is the property of a body to deform when a stress is applied, and to retain this deformation when the stress ceases.
