4. Prevention of extrusion defects
Current limitations in understanding extrusion defects have not
prevented the search for solutions that inhibit extrudate deformation.
The most conventional approaches involve modifying polymer architecture,
extrusion conditions (flow rate, die geometry, extrusion temperature)
and the addition of (preferably inexpensive) additives.
Modifying polymer architecture involves changing the chemistry
and manufacturing conditions of the polymer. This is an exciting task
for polymer companies. For a well-defined polymer manufacturing technology,
this can be difficult to achieve because many technical and commercial
aspects have to be weighed up.
