INTRODUCTION
The textile and clothing industry encompasses a wide range of activities, from the production of yarns and fibers to the manufacture of finished articles. Textile fibers, whether of natural (plant, animal or mineral) or chemical (artificial or synthetic) origin, undergo various transformation processes to become finished products for apparel, domestic or technical use.
This latter field encompasses numerous application sectors based on the use of yarns or fibers of very diverse origins and characteristics.
This study provides an overview of these different basic textile materials, from their properties to their manufacturing methods.
Textile architectures and applications are the subject of a second section entitled Textiles for technical use.
