Flame Retardants for polymeric materials

Few nitrogenous RFs are used on their own in vinyl polymers, but they are used in some polycondensates. Their performance is said to be due, in particular, to dilution of combustible gases by emission of degradation products with endothermic effects. The most common nitrogen RFs belong to the triazine group.

Melamine is obtained from triazine or cyanamide. It gives rise to numerous mineral derivatives (phosphate, borate) or organic derivatives (melamine cyanurate: melamine with isocyanuric acid) and condensed cyclic structures: "melem", "melon", etc.
