3.1 Nuclear reactions involved, sources of γ-photons
γ-photons can be used in analysis through two distinct nuclear interactions: photoexcitation and nuclear reaction.
Nuclear photoexcitation leads to a nucleus identical to the initial nucleus but in an excited state; it returns to the normal state by emitting one or more γ photons.
After excitation with relatively low-energy γ photons (a few MeV), this process can be used to assay elements with atomic numbers above 30 (Table 8). In practice, the sensitivity of these assays is in the tens of µg to mg range. Their advantage...
