4. Analysis methods

The European Commission has referenced 38 official analytical methods through various directives (table 3 ). These guidelines focus on 60 ingredients and do not cover new regulated molecules or CMR substances, which limits their application. In addition, the methods proposed are relatively simple and similar.

By way of example, the official method for controlling whitening actives (95/32/EC) and glycerol para-aminobenzoate, a UV filter (85/490/EEC) is the same in both cases. It uses TLC for identification and HPLC-UV/Vis for quantification of these cosmetic actives.
