Conservation-restoration of waterlogged archaeological wood

Archaeological artefacts are, in the most common sense, objects found in excavations. They act as historical documents, suggesting history, man's past and a subjective vision of these aspects, which raises the issue of authenticity. The choice of conservation interventions modifies the object, its understanding and perception, but also its materiality.

The notion of conservation-restoration has evolved considerably over time. Previously, the difference between repair and restoration did not exist. The first rules appeared in the 18th century.
