The detection of nuclear radiation is always a delicate problem, requiring a thorough understanding of the operation of the detector used and the capabilities of the associated electronics in order to choose the best solution (table 4 ). At present, fine spectroscopy of nuclear radiation is almost universally carried out using semiconductor detectors. However, many measurements can be carried out under excellent conditions using less sophisticated detectors that are perfectly suited to particular cases.
