2. How to use SECM

The main ways in which SECM is used are [6]:

  • feedback mode (FB) ;

  • generation/collection (GC) mode ;

  • penetration mode ;

  • direct mode ;

  • equilibrium disturbance mode ;

  • ion transfer mode at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES);

  • potentiometric mode.

The FB, GC and penetration modes are illustrated in figure 3. The basic principles of these SECM modes of operation are given here, using ultramicroelectrodes of the planar disk geometry most commonly used in SECM manipulations.
