4. Industrial applications and achievements

In addition to numerous applications in spectroscopy and physicochemistry, the trap's main field of application is gas chromatography. It was Finningan Mat's team who, in 1983, demonstrated the potential of the ITD device, from which it was marketed. At the same time, the ITMS was developed for research purposes, and its possibilities are constantly increasing, thanks in particular to the power of control software. In 1990, a rival device was developed by Franzen (Bruker-Franzen, Analytik GmbH, Bremen). This device differs from the previous one in that it systematically exploits the non-linearities of ion motion, deliberately introduced by superimposing additional multipolar terms, leading to greater sensitivity.
