Metrology techniques and tools for the Internet and its traffic

This article provides an overview of metrology activities in communication networks in general, and the Internet in particular.

• First of all, we defined metrology and situated its need at the level of engineering and networked research.

  One of the contributions of this article – and one of the key elements of Internet metrology – was to break down metrology activities into two parts:

  • the first part concerns the measurement and observation, strictly speaking, of phenomena occurring on the network; whether in terms of QoS measurements or observation of traffic transiting on links or in network nodes;

  • the second part involves in-depth analysis to highlight invisible phenomena that can be deduced from observed phenomena.
