2. Basic principles of single-electron nanodevices
In the early 1980s, the work of Fulton and Dolan
on single-electron tunneling devices (SETs) paved the way for single-electron electronics. Physicists were thus able to design nanodevices based on the Coulomb blocking principle, capable of generating or controlling the passage of electrons one by one through an electrical circuit.
