5. Find out why standard deviation is preferable to range
As we have seen, a sample does not represent reality, and it is unlikely to find the limit values of a phenomenon in a sample. On the other hand, the few data present in a sample make it possible to estimate a value for the standard deviation of the parent population and, consequently, to envisage an estimation of an interval covering the majority of values, particularly when the law of the phenomenon is normal.
