Vertical measuring devices are widely used instruments. Unlike hand-held instruments, which are self-sufficient when it comes to taking measurements, vertical gauges require a reference plane to take measurements. Whatever the type, they are always used in conjunction with a marble to take measurements along a vertical axis, normal to the marble. They can be used to measure height, thickness, depth, internal or external diameter, depending on the configuration of the associated measuring probe.
