This chapter reviews the theory behind surface temperature measurements. The various heat flows and influencing factors involved in using this method are reviewed to help the reader understand the phenomena involved in measurements. In this way, the resulting best practices will be easier to understand. These are basic elements which the reader can supplement if necessary by consulting the articles listed in the bibliography.
Surface temperature measurements involve three types of heat flow:
conduction ;
convection ;
radiation.
