2. Subtractive surface treatments
In this article, subtractive surface treatments are arbitrarily classified into 4 categories detailed below. Within these categories, only surface finishing techniques compatible with the complex geometries of additive manufacturing parts are discussed. As a result, surface finishing methods usually encountered in the metal industry, such as lapping or grinding, are not covered.
2.1 Cleaning and surface preparation
Cleaning techniques do not, strictly speaking, constitute material removal by polishing. Nevertheless, it is useful to describe the few techniques available, since they can be used to remove some of the loose particles, but also to clean parts after surface treatment:
