Beyond the welded assembly, the definition of a structure by a competent entity (design office, engineer, project manager...) encompasses various aspects:

• material (mechanical characteristics: R_e , R_m , ductility, toughness, weldability, durability);

• design and dimensioning calculations (geometry and loads) ;

• manufacturing (forming, assembly, heat treatment and NDT) ;

• testing ;

  which must be specified either by the client (owner, user) or by the previous entity.

When the structure falls within a regulated field of activity (e.g. pressure equipment), national texts and/or European directives specify the broad outlines of the above-mentioned aspects. These...
