The main functions of a bearing are to :

• position two parts (e.g. a shaft and a housing);

• allow rotation and reduce friction between the two parts;

• transmit forces between these two parts.

When a load is applied to a bearing, it is transmitted from one raceway to the other via the rolling elements. The number of rolling elements loaded in this way depends on their relative elastic deformations (figure 17 and article Ball and roller bearings and thrust bearings in this treatise).
