Lubricants for internal combustion engines - General standards

The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) brings together the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA). Since 1990, it has been developing specifications for low-viscosity, fuel-saving gasoline engine oils (SAE grades 0W-xx, 5W-xx and 10W-xx). These specifications, rated ILSAC GF-x (x = 1, 2, 3...), incorporate the requirements of API service classifications SH, SJ, SL, etc., to which are added fuel economy requirements assessed, as previously mentioned, according to ASTM Sequence VI, VIA and then VIB procedures, as well as minimum laboratory physico-chemical performances.
