1. Operating variables
The operating characteristics of a turbomachine reflect the functional relationships between the various variables that define its operation. For a given machine conveying an incompressible fluid of density ρ, these variables fall into various categories.
These are those that characterize liquid flow and which, for the user of a turbomachine, are mainly the following.

• Useful (for a pump) or available (for a turbine) work or mass energy, denoted by τ
