Thin sheet metal stamping is usually carried out on double-acting presses (see article on Presses[B 7 570]) using tooling comprising (figure 1):
a punch on which the metal is bent and stretched;
a die to support the metal, which can sometimes be a counter-form (at least partial) to the punch;
a sheet clamp to hold the sheet in place and slow the flow of metal into the die.
