4. Milling power and pressure
The specific cutting pressure (Kc) is an important factor in calculating the power required for a milling operation, a factor which gives a measure of the machinability of a given material given the geometry and chip thickness chosen.
Specific cutting pressure is, by definition, the (tangential) force required to detach a chip with a cross-section of 1 square millimeter. In practice, this is the cutting force (Fc) required, divided by the surface area of the undeformed chip (A ) (figure 19). It is measured in N/mm2. For a medium-carbon steel, it is 2,000 N/mm2, while for a typical aluminum alloy, it is only 800 N/mm2.
