In order to test only the surface of materials (a few tens of nanometers), the sensors used in nanoindentation must meet very specific criteria, particularly in terms of resolution and temperature drift.
The indentation tip is mounted on these sensors using a metal rod with a low thermal expansion coefficient. This tip is made of hard material and has a well-defined geometry. Wear on this tip over time or any manufacturing defects must be accurately assessed.
The forces applied in nanoindentation, typically in the order of millinewtons, vary between a few tens of micronewtons and 1 N. Thus, nanoindentation bridges the gap between microindentation and near-field microscopy. No single sensor...
