4. Scratch test results on different materials
Although traditionally used to characterize hard coatings, scratch
testing is now commonly employed to characterize a much wider spectrum
of materials, ranging from hard materials to soft polymers and even
elastomers. Some typical examples from each material category are
given here.
In common industrial quality control situations, scratch testing
can be used for quick and easy grading of different coatings, to differentiate
between small changes in composition that could affect coating integrity
and adhesion.
