4. Zero wear and tear as an opportunity to strengthen sustainable development

Reducing wear to the point of eliminating it (zero wear) increases the lifespan of mechanisms, and therefore seems at first glance to be an opportunity for sustainable development. Zero wear" or "no wear" can in some cases be seen as a concept hostile to technology, transformation and progress.

4.1 Limits of the zero-wear approach

At a conference on wear and tear in 1938 organized by the Association of German Engineers (VDI), the following statement was made :
