3.1.1 Surface interactions
The main mechanisms contributing to the tribological behaviour of DLC are :
the formation of a thin transfer layer, or tribofilm, with low shear resistance to accommodate the velocity gradient between the two solids;
adsorption and desorption of atoms or molecules on the surface of the DLC film; these phenomena will condition the adhesive effects at the interface.
