In tribology, surface is not limited solely to the notion of the contact area of bodies, but more generally concerns the elements of contact that play a role in friction, i.e. mechanical stresses, temperatures, the behavior of the third body (lubricant, wear debris, etc.). These elements are the mechanical, physical and chemical properties of the materials involved, and the geometric characteristics including, by extension, the shape of the parts.
