1. Some background information on aeronautical combustion chambers
The combustion chamber is the engine component located between the compression stages and the turbines (see figure 1). Its function is to convert the energy contained in the fuel in chemical form into heat. This is achieved by combustion, an exothermic process involving the oxidation of a reducing fuel by an oxidizing agent. In today's aeronautical propulsion context, the oxidizer is the oxygen contained in the air (referred to as aerobic combustion) and the fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons.
