The aim of filtration is to obtain a suspension of solids in a liquid:

• a clear liquid called filtrate, more or less clarified (for example, no particles larger than 100, 10 or 1 μm);

• a solid called cake, deposited on the filter or drawn off continuously, more or less dry.

The filter surface (or filter media) can be made from a wide range of materials, including paper, cloth, glass frit, sand, stainless steel mesh, etc. The solid deposited on the filter (cake) also acts as a filter medium. The solid deposited on the filter (cake) also acts as the filter medium.
