2. Dynamics of rotating components
At the heart of every internal combustion engine, the crankshaft rests on the bearings and is rotated by the connecting rods under the impulse of the pistons. With the movement of the connecting rod, it transforms the linear motion of the piston into rotary motion. It must also support the weight of the flywheel on the power transmission side, and usually the torsion damper on the free side. Depending on the application, the crankshaft may be required to drive electrical or hydraulic machines. For this reason, it is essential to model the various connections between the crankshaft and the parts attached to it.
