4.1.1 Need for filtration
A large quantity of air flows through a gas turbine, to support combustion and cool the hot parts. A small quantity of this air is also directed towards the labyrinths used to seal the bearings and prevent oil leaks.
As the air is drawn from the atmosphere by the compressor, all the impurities it contains pass through the gas turbine to the exhaust. The risks of physical and chemical pollution described below make air filtration essential....
