2. Optimum insulation thickness

The optimum economic thickness is that which ensures minimum installation costs.

The overall cost, a function of the insulation thickness e, is equal to :

C(e) = C1 (e) + C 2 (e)( 2 )

with :

C (F/m)
 : 
overall cost for one meter of piping
C1 (F/m)
 : 
the cost of heat loss
C2 (F/m)
 : 
the cost of insulation.

As e increases the C1 function decreases while C2 increases. There is a thickness e0 for which the overall cost C is minimal. The optimal economic thickness e0...
