Spark ignition for premix engines: techniques

When designing the ignition system, a number of layout constraints need to be taken into account to ensure that it functions properly.

The ignition system consists of the ignition coils and the spark plugs. In the case of remote coils (not directly connected to the spark plugs), it is necessary to use high-voltage cables to carry the high voltage to the spark plug.

For example, a coil directly connected to a spark plug (installed in the cylinder head) is subject to much greater thermal gradients than a remote coil.

The design of an ignition system component must take into account :

• its mechanical integration on the motor to define the component's overall dimensions and mechanical interfaces;

• the engine's physico-chemical environment...
