Motor standardization is handled by various bodies, depending on the professions concerned. Several ISO and CEN technical committees are responsible for motors, depending on their applications.

ISO/TC 70 "Internal combustion engines", whose secretariat is provided by BSI in the UK, is responsible for international standardization in the field of reciprocating and rotary internal combustion engines, including definitions, performance/testing and special requirements, taking into account the relationship between engines and engine-driven machines and the surrounding environment.
