4. Viscous aspects of flow

Viscosity plays a vital role in turbomachinery operation, since it is responsible for losses. These losses are usually divided into three categories:

  • Profile losses, linked to the development of viscous zones along the blade chord between the leading and trailing edges, and the resulting development of wakes. The more pronounced the effect of current sheet warping, the greater the shearing effect, which can lead to additional losses in directions normal to the current lines.
