Friction welding

At first glance, a friction machine is characterized by the maximum forging force it can produce. This parameter provides an indication of machine size and capacity. When welding low-alloy steels, the average unit forging force is 8 to 12 daN /mm ² (table 2).

This allows us to deduce :

• the maximum solid or tubular cross-section that can be welded by the machine;

• power and spindle speed for a corresponding full section.

By way of example, table 6 shows the characteristics of a number of piloted friction-welding machines.

There is currently equipment on the market ranging from a few hundred newtons to 200,000 daN and more.
